Recap: Misa scores twice again in 7-4 defeat to Knights

Saginaw, Mich. – The Saginaw Spirit (5-4-1-0) fell to the London Knights (3-4-1-0) Saturday night by a final score of 7-4 in front of 3,584 fans at the Dow Event Center in Riverfront Saginaw, Michigan.

The game started with Saginaw taking a tripping penalty at 2:10 in the first period which resulted in a London goal. George Diaco scored on a backhand shot at 2:47 in the first period after Ryan Del Monte passed from the left side of the zone. Sam

Dickinson started the play by giving the puck to Del Monte.

Spirit defensemen Brayden Hislop was called for a check from behind penalty at 4:08 in the first frame. Saginaw was able killed it off, showcasing their top-ranked penalty kill.

Zayne Parekh took a high sticking penalty at 8:24 and were able to score a shorthanded goal at 9:51 in the opening period. Vegas Golden Knights prospect Matyas Sapovaliv scored his seventh goal of the season while shorthanded after he and T-Bone Codd skated into the zone with two defenders. Sapovaliv took a backhanded shot after being passed the puck from Codd.

The Knights answered back with a goal of their own at 12:07 in the opening frame. George Diaco got his second of the game on a breakaway chance after Brody Crane gifted him the puck in the neutral zone. Diaco put the puck under Andrew Oke’s pad and into the back of the net.

London added to their lead at 15:04 in the first frame on a one timer goal. Montreal Canadiens prospect Logan Mailloux netted his first of the season after being setup by George Diaco for his third point of the game. Sean McGurn started the play after passing to Diaco.

The Knights scored shortly after at 16:05 in the first period. Jackson Edward gave the puck to Easton Cowain who passed to Denver Barker for a tip in at the side of the net.

The first period closed with London leading 4-1 and in shots, 10-5.

The second period opened with London continuing to pressure the Spirit until Oliver Bonk took a cross-checking penalty at 1:18 in the period. Saginaw was unable to score on the opportunity.

The Knights extended their lead at 7:51 in the middle frame. Alec Leonard potted his first goal of the season after Luca Testa shot at Oke for a rebound. Nicholas Yearwood was credited with an assist on the play.

The Spirit got their second of the game at 9:09 in the second period courtesy of Michael Misa. The 2022 OHL draft pick scored on a wrist shot after Calem Mangone passed behind to Misa.

London answered back quickly with a wrist shot goal at 10:08 in the middle period. Brody Crane scored his first of the season and Sean McGurn is credited with the assist after he passed from behind the net to Crane.

Saginaw got to use their powerplay again after Alec Leonard took an interference penalty at in the middle period. The Spirit were unable to score on the chance.

The second period ended with London leading 6-2 and shots 17-12 in favor of the Knights.

The third period started with renewed pressure from Saginaw that resulted in a goal just 90 seconds in. Michael Misa scored his eighth goal of the season after Calem Mangone stripped the puck on the right side and got it to Misa for a wrist shot goal.

The Spirit closed the lead to two after a goal from Luke McNamara at 5:36 in the final frame. Calem Mangone gave the puck to Sebastien Gervais who set up McNamara with his first of the year.

Saginaw got a powerplay chance after Ryan Del Monte got called for tripping at 7:58 in the final frame. The Spirit committed a too many men penalty at 9:07, but neither team scored on the chances.

Andrew Oke manned the crease for Saginaw, making 14 saves on 20 shots. Zach Bowen started for London, making 14 saves on 18 shots.

With five minutes left, London led the game 6-4 and shots, 20-15. Saginaw pulled their goalie to get an extra player on the ice.

Pavel Mintyukov got high sticked by Easton Cowan to give the team a six on four advantage. Towards the end of the penalty, Luke McNamara was tripped to create another powerplay chance. Saginaw failed to score on either chance.

London successfully killed off the penalties and scored an empty net goal with seven seconds remaining in the game. The game ends with Saginaw losing 7-4 and shots in favor of Saginaw 21-18. The Spirit fall to 5-4-1-0.

Saginaw continues their home stand Wednesday, October 26 as they host the Flint Firebirds at The Dow Event Center in Riverfront Saginaw, Michigan.
