Stags hosting longtime rival in hall of fame game | Prep Sports

Berkeley High School’s football team just split meetings with two Berkeley County rivals on the road to start the season. Now, the Stags host the program they’ve encountered the most on the gridiron during their annual hall of fame game Sept. 2.

Summerville High School will roll into Moncks Corner with some momentum after cruising past Carolina Forest, 38-7, on Friday. Berkeley (1-1) will try to honor their 2022 hall of fame class with a victory, though. The Green Wave has won two straight in the series, including 21-14 last season. They also won, 42-20, in 2020.

Berkeley’s last victory celebration following a Summerville game was, 40-37, in 2019.

Summerville leads all-time, 49-20, in a series that goes back to 1951. In last year’s clash in Moncks Corner, the Green Wave built a 21-0 advantage in the first half before Berkeley came back to make a game of it with a pair of touchdowns in the second half. The Stags got the ball late, too, with a chance to tie or win but Summerville held on.

The Stags, who edged Timberland in their opener Aug. 20, are coming off a 22-17 loss at Hanahan High School Aug. 26. They were moving into position to steal the win at the end but came up five yards short of the goal line on the last play. Meanwhile, the Green Wave pummeled Carolina Forest and scored in all three phases.

After Summerville, the Stags travel to West Ashley.

The school’s 11th hall of fame class includes five former BHS student-athletes from as many different decades, going back as far as the 1950s for one inductee.

Rodney Sabiston (Class of 1957), Joe Harnage (1976), Will Swicord (1990), Jabari Levey (2002) and LeAnna Morrison (2011) will be honored at halftime of the game.

The new inductees bring the total number of hall of famers to 74, which includes 72 individuals and two state championship football teams (1960 and 1981). All five new inductees participated in at least two sports.

The class is set to be honored in a banquet at 6 p.m., on Sept. 1 in the school’s cafeteria. Tickets are $10 and include dinner. Tickets are also available at Mims-Garrett Insurance (400 Altman Street – Suite A) or by emailing
