Fall Calf Market Red Hot at Superior’s Video Royale Sale in Nevada

Russell Nemetz

This week the fall calf market is back in the spotlight as Superior Livestock Auction hosts its Video Royale Sale from Winnemucca, Nevada. Superior representative and auctioneer Trent Stewart says the calf market remains hot as the drought’s impact in the West continues.

“It’s long overdue for a lot of these producers and I think our buyers are trying very, very hard to procure cattle given the prices that exist right now,” said Stewart. “They’re giving it all and betting on the outcome. I guess in short, I would say that the market is definitely chasing supply.”

This week, the average spread between steer and heifer calves is around $0.20. Stewart says prices are better for ranchers that are able to ship calves later in the fall.

“On the feeder weight classes, if we get into September and October, they’re a whole lot more desirable,” said Stewart. “You know, the market could be 5 to 10 cents higher than the immediate delivery cattle that come in August. I think it’s just because they’ve met their needs and their bunk space just isn’t available. Plus, I think what we do in video marketing is so tight or correlated to the futures market that if you look at the deferred board in the futures market, they’re quite a little bit more lofty than maybe the August contract.”
